Portugal can eliminate Morocco from World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal can send Morocco to an early World Cup exit on Wednesday.

A second straight defeat would ensure elimination for the North African side which has not let an opposing player score in this World Cup campaign since 2015.

The Morocco defence, however, is proven to be resilient. Anchored by Juventus centre back Mehdi Benatia, the Atlas Lions kept six clean sheets in its African qualifying group. It was back in November 2015 that Morocco conceded a single goal to Equatorial Guinea in a two-leg qualifying round won 2-1 on aggregate.

Morocco and Portugal have been down this road before, in a 1986 World Cup group in Mexico.

Facing three European opponents, Morocco drew 0-0 with Poland and England, then beat Portugal 3-1 in Guadalajara.

Morocco topped that group to enter the Round of 16 and Portugal finished last.

To be fair, Morocco’s opposition during this run weren’t exactly up to Portugal’s standards.

Fernando Santos may not have seen his side take all three points, but that was never a likelihood against Spain and to perform the way that they did was impressive enough. Despite this, the bookies have given us rather generous odds to consider. KIRA88 think backing a Portugal win looks the best value for money here.

KIRA88 also expecting goals. For all of the excitement Ronaldo brought to the table, Portugal’s ageing defence were exposed far too much. Morocco have every chance of getting on the scoresheet, so a Portugal win and over 2.5 goals looks a good choice here, along with a 3-1 correct score predictions.
