Liverpool make Alisson decision after Karius horror show

Liverpoil will reportedly launch a fresh attempt to being in Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker this summer in the wake of their Champions League defeat to Real Madrid.

The Reds’ season ended miserably in Kiev as two catastrophic errors from Loris Karius cost them any chance of winning the competition after top goalscorer and chief threat Mo Salah had gone off injured in the first half.

The tearful German shot-stopper took it upon himself to apologise to the Liverpool fans inside the NSC Olimpiyskiy Stadium on Saturday night and also issued a social media statement in which he declared himself “infinitely sorry” for his errors.

But according to both the Guardian and the Telegraph, Jurgen Klopp has now decided that he will look to sign a new No 1 in the summer window to address a position that has caused them problems for several seasons.

The Liverpool manager had already been considering summer business in that department with Simon Mignolet likely to be moved on in search of a regular starting spot having been demoted to the bench since January.

It was expected that due to Karius’ notable improvement between his first game back in the team - against Manchester City in the Premier League - and the end of the season, Klopp would look to recruit a keeper who would provide competition for the 24-year-old.

But following Karius’ disastrous performance against Madrid, fresh reports suggest that Klopp will look to bring in an out-and-out new first choice with Roma’s Alisson - who has long been linked with the Merseyside outfit - atop his list.

The Brazilian came face-to-face with Liverpool in the Champions League semi-finals and though they scored seven past him across two legs, Alisson is rated as one of the best in the world between the sticks.

But Liverpool’s inquiries to Roma earlier this season seemed to put a stop to the Anfield club’s interest with the Serie A side declaring that they wanted over £60million - double the current world record fee for a keeper - to sell Alisson.

Reports suggest that the Roma man is Klopp’s sole preference, similarly to the pursuit of Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk.

The Dutchman has repaid the faith put in him by Klopp after the boss spent £75m to the towering centre-back him in January.
