It was a fascinating sight to behold inside the Berlin Stadium as Eintracht Frankfurt shocked Bayern Munich to secure their first German Cup since 1988. The club, led by manager Niko Kovac – who is set to succeed Jupp Heynckes as Bayern coach – had their foot on the pedestal from scratch.
Ante Rebic scored the opener before the 10-minute mark before Robert Lewandowski leveled the scoring 8 minutes into the second-half. Nevertheless, the heat was turned on the Polish man’s side as another goal by Rebic and a final finish by Mijat Gacinovic sealed the 3-1 victory for the underdogs.
The feat meant that Bayern Munich has now failed to win the German Cup in two successive years for the first time since 2011 and 2012. The German giants lost out on the accolade to Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund respectively.
Bayern Munich will play Frankfurt in the 2018 DFL Supercup this summer. This will be Bayern’s seventh straight Supercup appearance. They’ve only missed one since the preseason cup was brought back in the summer of 2010. This is the first ever appearance in the Supercup for Frankfurt.
